Frequently Asked Questions
Can’t find what you’re looking for? Contact us and a FLEXpert will respond shortly.
What cell types are compatible with the FLEX chip?
The platform is currently optimized for use with suspension cells or fixed cells in suspension. Work is currently underway to support adherent cell culture and capture on the FLEX chip.
Contact us to discuss options for adherent cell workflows.
Can I use the FLEX chip with my existing microscope?
The FLEX chip is compatible with inverted epifluorescence microscopes with dry objective lenses up to 40X magnification. A standard slide holder and automated scanning stage are recommended.
Validated microscopes include:
- Nikon Ti2-E
- Evos FL Auto 2
- Leica DMi8
- Keyence BZ-X700
- Zaber Nucleus
What assays can I perform on the FLEX chip?
The FLEX chip supports most fluorescence-based live cell assays. Our team will work with you to determine the best approach for miniaturizing your assay on the chip.
Example fluorescence-based assays:
- Cell surface marker staining / immunostaining
- Cytokine signaling / cytokine catch assays
- Cell-cell interaction (at single-cell resolution)
- Cell proliferation / cytotoxicity
Since live cells can be cultured directly on the chip, you may combine your fluorescence assay with:
- Drug treatment
- Temporal studies / multiple timepoints
- Co-culture or multiplexing

Do I need to purchase a Flexomics instrument or reagents?
No! We designed the Flexomics system with you (and your budget!) in mind. The FLEX consumable chip can be used with your cells, in your incubator, with your reagents, and with your microscope.
Your purchase of the FLEX chip (with barcoded RNA capture beads included), along with the service structure of your choice, is all that’s required.
What is the imaging resolution of the FLEX chip?
Currently, the Flexomics platform is optimized for cell-level fluorescence imaging.
Please contact us if your workflow requires sub-cellular resolution imaging.
Can I perform sequencing at my lab (or with my preferred third party)?
Yes, we can ship prepared sequencing libraries to you or to your preferred sequencing provider.
Can I receive the raw data to perform analysis in-house?
Typically, Flexomics performs pre-processing of imaging and sequencing outputs to link each datapoint to its well-of-origin. You receive an integrated data csv containing fluorescence intensity values and mapped reads for each unique well ID.
If necessary, we can work with your bioinformatics team to generate data linkage tools to allow you to perform pre-processing in-house. Contact us to discuss options.
